The Vintage Theater sets Austen classic in 1960’s America
Following the positive response of their staged reading production in November 2009 (performing Joanna Norland’s adaptation) and in honor of the book’s 200th anniversary The Vintage Theater will stage a full production based on Jane Austen’s classic novel, Pride & Prejudice. Performances May 10th – 18th 2013 (Fridays at 8:00 pm / Saturdays at 2:00 pm & 8:00 pm)
Published in 1813 Pride & Prejudice weaves a tale of love, morality, marriage and social structure in early 19th century England. Having sold over twenty million copies worldwide since its publication Pride & Prejudice has proven itself a jewel of the literary world that continues to shine more and more with each passing year.
The Vintage Theater will mount a production of this classic piece with a new twist of its own design. While the words and wit of Austen will (for the most part) remain unchanged the time and place will be moved to early 1960’s New England. The production (a new version adaptation designed by The Vintage’s creative team) will be performed in this fashion not only to engage a more dynamic aesthetic but in the attempt to make the piece more accessible and to highlight the unfortunate similarities of the time periods social structure. In addition to the production itself The Vintage Theater will be partnering with various local organizations to create axillary and education based programming to incite more interest from the community at large.
The Vintage Theater will be producing this work in the second floor of the Jermyn Hotel building (former Electric Theatre Company space) thanks to the generous assistance of its current residence, New Life Church. The Vintage Theater is located directly below this space in the historic Manhattan Room, which is within the same building.
